Amber Rubarth

Amber Rubarth

Amber Rubarth won the Grand Prize in this year’s New Song Mountain Stage Contest for her song “Letter From My Lonelier Self,” giving her the great opportunity to record her new unreleased album with a musical hero of hers, Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Norah Jones, Cold War Kids). Her quirky and endearingly candid songwriting has attracted enthusiasm from NPR’s All Songs Considered, The Huffington Post, BBC Radio, a glowing feature in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and a Sun Studio Session airing nationwide on PBS.

Amber will be performing as part of a trio for this show, backed by Dave Eggar and Tim Snider.

Matthew Larsen and The Documents

Matthew Larsen and The Documents

Matthew Larsen has been a member of the vibrant Western Massachusetts music scene for a few decades, attracting audiences with introspective piano rock songs and thoughtful vocal arrangements. Sometimes short, quiet and sweet– other times building into wall-of-sound Hotel-California-like anthems, Matthew’s songs often recall serious health issues (Matthew underwent a stem cell transplant at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston in late 2005).

With friends and instrumentalists, The Documents (Greg Saulmon, Aric Bieganek, Alex Peterson, and first cousin and longtime collaborator, Steve Biegner), their debut album “Apheresis” was lovingly recorded in studios, hallways, and living rooms by Dave Chalfant (The Nields) in and produced by Ethan Tufts (State Shirt).

Matthew also organizes and coordinates the Dark Dining Room house concert series.

Dennis Crommett

Dennis Crommett (photo by Max Germer)

Dennis Crommett is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Northampton, Massachusetts who recently released his acclaimed record, “In The Buffalo Surround“. Inspired by a trip to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine where Crommett spent some quality time in a cabin with an acoustic guitar, the 11 tracks The Telegraph describes as “melodic and wistful folk songs” often sway into up-beat alt-country territory.

When not writing his own songs or releasing under his electronic moniker, City of Domes, Dennis is best known as guitarist for chamber pop outfit, Winterpills. Dennis also plays with his indie-rock band Spanish for Hitchhiking and has backed up artists such as Stephen Kellogg and Kris Delmhorst.

Steve Biegner and Julia Suriano

Steve Biegner

Steve Biegner

A few years after releasing his album, As The Orchestra Swells (The Lights Go Out) produced by David Chalfant (The Nields), Steve Biegner sequestered himself in his small apartment and wrote – songs, poems, short stories, essays, shopping lists, checks – anything. And then it was time to pack up and move to New York to attend the Manhattan School of Music to study classical voice… to sing Schubert, Beethoven, Copland. And then on the eve of his 26th birthday, feeling not as prolific as he maybe once was, he took stock of his own songs and decided to release them into the wild. You can listen to them here. Steve is busy, sure. Because these days, when he’s not singing opera or writing songs of his own, he’s also playing drums and other things for Matthew Larsen and The Documents. Julia Suriano joins Steve on vocals for this performance.

Aric Bieganek (of The Royal Order of Chords and Keys)

Aric Bieganek

Aric Bieganek

Aric Bieganek grew up infused with the belief that music can both tell stories and inspire personal and social change. A multi-instrumentalist versatile rocker at heart, he explored his versatility at Berklee College of Music. His own folk/rock style mixes social commentary, thoughtful lyrics, and humor. Aric Bieganek has also gained a faithful following of young rockers throughout Massachusetts as a childrens’ musician and teacher, performing with his kids’ band The Royal Order of Chords and Keys (R.O.C.K. for short). When he’s not busy doing that, he’s playing bass, percussion, and other things for Matthew Larsen and The Documents. Quite a versatile rocker indeed!

Deep River

Deep River is Rachel Beauregard, Bryan Dawley, and Luke Brindley, a power-folk trio from Virginia who create their own brand of music they’ve termed “Front Porch Pop”. It’s a fluid, sonic experience combining elements of pop, folk, and blues with straight-up homegrown sass. Deep River’s latest album, “Ten Mornings” was released in November to two sold out shows and they were recently featured in Paste Magazine’s Best Of What’s Next.

Darlingside

Darlingside

Darlingside

Darlingside is a Northampton, Massachusetts-based “string-rock” quintet that has played to packed houses from Portland to D.C., headlining such prestigious venues as The Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, Brooklyn Bowl in NYC, and the Paramount Theatre in Rutland, VT. Lush five-part vocal harmonies, classical cello-violin duets, and compelling break-beats characterize the band’s sound. With a widely eclectic, cross-genre blend of original material, Darlingside’s unquestionable originality is borne of an unlikely hodgepodge of musical backgrounds.

Andrew Vladeck

Andrew Vladeck

Andrew Vladeck

Andrew Vladeck is a New York-born singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist, playing alt-folk and post-americana rock. As highlighted on his upcoming EP, Constellations, he balances spirited, lyrical-driven songs with finger plucked acoustic instrumentation, deft wit, and some freewheeling fun. After an unusual career as a NYC Urban Park Ranger, Andrew walked out of Central Park to pursue music full time.  Recently returned from a European tour and a regular at venues in New York, Andrew won first place in the International Songwriting Competition (awarded by Tom Waits and Brian Wilson) and was voted NYC Artist of the Month by The Deli Magazine.

Matthew Carefully

Matthew Carefully

Matthew Carefully (née Matthew Loiacono) is a musician from upstate New York. Performing original and adapted / rearranged music on mandolin, banjo, acoustic & electric guitars, drums, percussion and much more, he is mildly obsessed with marrying traditional instruments with modern technology and sounds. Known to utilize live on-the-fly looping, octave pedals, thick distortion and heavy reverb, Matthew delivers a unique, constantly evolving musical performance. Author Rick Moody (Garden State, The Ice Storm, Right Livelihoods, etc) recently wrote this passage about Matthew in his music blog on The Rumpus.

Will Stratton

Will Stratton

From NPR’s All Song’s Considered: “Just 22, Stratton is already working on his third album. The summer he graduated from high school in New Jersey, Stratton recorded his first album, What the Night Said. His second, No Wonder, was released in 2009 when he graduated from Bennington College. The albums showcase a colorful imagination, and if the first one leans heavily on influences such as Sufjan Stevens (who played oboe on What the Night Said), the second reveals an artist bringing his unique vision into focus. Since Stratton sometimes plays guitar with intricate finger-picking and sings with an intimate, unpretentious voice, he’s often compared to Nick Drake. But Stratton shouldn’t be pigeonholed — he’s evolving and growing too quickly.”

Matthew Larsen and The Documents

Matthew Larsen

Massachusetts piano-based musician Matthew Larsen underwent a stem cell transplant at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston in 2005. Much of that experience is is reflected in the songs on Apheresis, Matthew Larsen and The Documents’ forthcoming full-length featuring an incredible cast of musicians: Greg Saulmon (King Radio, The Brass), Steve Biegner (Smokejumpers), David Chalfant (The Nields), Mark Schwaber (Hospital, Lloyd Cole and The Small Ensemble), Aric Bieganek (The Royal Order of Chords and Keys, Oweihops), Rebekah Dutkiewicz (Oweihops), Ethan Tufts (State Shirt), Matthew Loiacano (Matthew Carefully, Kamikaze Hearts), and Philip Price (Winterpills). Apheresis is slated for release in the fall of 2010.
